Beyond the Wizard’s Sleeve – “Winter in June”

by growingpeople

Some music today, from DJ/producers Erol Alkan and Richard Norris‘ psychedelic rock act, Beyond the Wizard’s Sleeve.

“Winter in June” (2008) is a re-edit of the The Mystic Astrologic Crystal Band’s “Flowers Never Cry” (1967), and features none other than legendary gardener Percy Thrower offering the kind of wisdom that earned him his reputation as Britain’s first celebrity gardener. His work on the BBC’s Gardening Club and Gardeners’ World spanned three decades, and his thirteen year stint on children’s programme Blue Peter, from 1974 to 1987, makes him the programme’s longest-serving gardener.

Surely the only gardener to pull it off while smoking his pipe in full suit and tie?

With pearls including “I like to see plants seed themselves, they find a place in the garden where they look happy” and “I do talk to the plants, I suppose I grumble at them sometimes…” delivered with the charm of Thrower’s made-for-radio voice, I can’t listen to this track without smiling.
